You will hear the plot to this film ninety times before you peruse this review, so you will be spared my summary. There are only a few summations that matter about the new Wes Anderson puppet animation picture: The first thing you need to know? It’s just a masterpiece. Maybe not in the Pride and Prejudice manner, but rather in the way one hundred individually-snot-nosed adolescent boys could come together and form an angelic choir: It’s harmoniously constructed by several smaller, scruffier parts. There is the craftsmanship and fluidity of the stop-motion animation, with a mélange of textures, colors and depth, no doubt influenced by the herald of stop-motion, Jan Spankmeyer. There is the novel narrative arrangement that somehow manages to introduce and resolve several mini-plots without leading the viewer off track. There is the attention to the finer, warmer details that Anderson collects throughout his writing process, like the hem of Mr. Fox’s high water pants or the extremely elaborate rules to the fictional game “Hotbox.” There are the Anderson golden main-stays -- like the grand aqueous pans of multiple scenes at once, the story-book character introductions and chapters, and of course, a reverent soundtrack filled with ‘60s rarities, Beach Boys ballads and original honky-tonk diddies by Jarvis Cocker. Mr. Fox simultaneously manages to be a sweet, tender and complicated, larger-than-life action film -- and in the heart of this particular critic, it's the best film of the year.
