Two outstanding brands have set to join forces this upcoming fall in a brilliant collaboration: Louis Vuitton, the ultimate French luxury brand, and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, the ultimate fashion rebel, will open a store in Tokyo this September. Yves Carcelle, chairman & chief executive at LV, approached Kawakubo with this endeavor as a “fine way” to celebrate the 30 years Louis Vuitton has been in Japan. Carcelle also stated that Marc Jacobs, [artistic director of Louis Vuitton,] admired Comme des Garcons and was an enthusiastic supporter of the idea of a joint venture. "It is impossible to overstate Rei Kawakubo's influence on modern fashion. I find it wonderful to think that 30 years ago, this immense talent, someone who has inspired so many others, was inspired by Louis Vuitton,” said Jacobs

For a three month span, the store will house historic Louis Vuitton trunks and bags as well as the six exclusive one-off bags designed by Kawakubo in the classic LV monogram pattern. Kawakubo has created two “Party” bags, along with small evening purses, as well as customizing the Papillon with kawaii animal charms. The designer also customized the Mini HL with multiple slender handles (which we are oddly attracted to despite practicality). In addition, Louis Vuitton is bringing back two iconic designs from the 1970s – the Petit Marceau and the Sac 2 Poches. Kawakubo has also totally redesigned their own Comme des Garcon store for the three month occasion, proving the enthusiasm and commitment. The bags will only be available when ordering through the Louis Vuitton and Comme des Garcon store, which will be delivered to your local LV store several months later. Customers will receive a certificate inside a special card holder in Louis Vuitton’s traditional natural leather, embossed with the ‘Louis Vuitton at Comme des Garcons’ signature. You will not be able to order by phone or online so if you are looking to get your hands on one of these, I suggest you book your flight right now!
When talking about the collection, which was inspired by her memories of LV, Kawakubo stated, “In designing them, I have kept Louis Vuitton’s traditional concept as it is, but sometimes two handles become one, sometimes two handles become eight… It has been a remarkably exciting opportunity for me to have been able to participate in Louis Vuitton’s traditional design and heritage.”
