A horror movie involving four hot college students on vacation in Mexico, who find their way to some ancient, cursed Mayan ruins? You would not be blamed for perhaps taking a discreet pass on the opportunity, though the film does offer a surprisingly engaging set up than most of its ilk and genre. This is no Touristas, looking for any opportunity to slather you with gore. For one thing, the four college students, Jeff (Jonathon Tucker), Amy (Jena Malone), Stacy (Laura Ramsey) and Eric (Shawn Ashmore) have a bit more going for them than good looks and buff bods. Jeff is going pre-med, you see, and has plans on being a doctor, while his girlfriend, Amy, a bit of a mad party girl, frets that he'll be moving away from her. More is hinted at with Amy and Stacy's relationship, a sense of history and support that is, by and large, refreshingly believable. It is, in fact, in the film's first half-hour that it is most engrossing. By the time the group, led by a friendly German named Mathias (Joe Anderson), get to the ruins in question, however, things start degrading a bit. Let's just say the flora are very happy to see them, but not so much some nearby natives. The concept itself doesn't go much beyond silly, but impressively enough, the film -- and its leads -- never let up. It is their determination to wring the most out of the paper-thin conception that carries the film more or less through its 90-minute run time. The "unrated" version mostly involves grisly, impromptu surgery Jeff has to perform on two of his unfortunate companions, the worst of which involves Tequila, heated rocks, a sizzling saucepan and a hunting knife. You would be missing absolutely nothing of import were you to cover your eyes until the screaming has stopped.
The disc does come laden with special features and bonuses, including deleted scenes, a making-of featurette and an assortment of other goodies.
