By Al Sotack

There is no stopping Athens sludge legends Harvey Milk. It might be slow as hell, but the locomotive pounding of this group’s momentum will knock you down just the same. Not even a breakup could get in the way of their fifth album in sixteen years. And Life…The Best Game In Town delivers what made these dudes the darlings of a practically invisible scene: an arty, heavy, original hodgepodge of rocking doom. It stands up to the best of their older work, all of which is now available for the first time ever thanks to local Relapse Records. Unlike most doom which prides itself on as few notes as possible, they create a complex rhythmic interplay between percussion and lead.  When they kick into high gear, like on “After All I’ve Done For You, This is How You Repay Me?” their chops elevate what could be a plodding muddy mess into a dynamic masterpiece of brutality.  Whatever they are doing during their exorbitantly long hiatuses works for them, because Harvey Milk haven’t lost even a bit of their edge.  (Hydrahead Records)
